Elizabeth J. Menke

NORTH BANGOR – Elizabeth Jane Menke (Van Ess), 87, wife of the late William Menke, Jr, passed away May 1, 2017 at UVM Alice Hyde Medical Center with her children by her side.

Arrangements are with the Flint Funeral Home, Moira.

Born in Hackensack, New Jersey, November 30, 1929, the daughter of the late Leonard and Eunice (Curtis) VanEss. She attended School both in Hackensack, New Jersey, and was a graduate of Brushton High School. Elizabeth united into marriage with William Menke, Jr. in 1949, a union which lasted 66 years until William's passing on June 29, 2016.

Elizabeth was instrumental in many local organization; she was Past President of the Franklin Co 4-H leader Assoc., She helped bring together the "Bangor Rangers" 4-H club, Past President of the Franklin Co. Historical Assoc. from 1974-1975, and former Trustee of the Franklin Co. Historical Society. In 1966 she became a member of the Adirondack Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Vice Chairman of the NYS for DAR School Committee in 1980, Chairman of the National Defense, for the Adirondack Chapter, Director of the Wilder Assoc., and a member of the Chabeleate "Chapter Order of the Eastern Star"; joining in 1954, as well as a Seventh Degree Grange Member. Elizabeth was also a member of the Genealogical group of Northern, NY, member of the Franklin Co. Bi-Centennial Commission, and helped publish "The Owl" a genealogy paper put out as a pamphlet then later a section of the Franklin Co. Review. Elizabeth was once owned and operated the "Attic Treasures".

At one time she enjoyed raising a large vegetable garden, where she would can and freeze vegetables which would be used during the winter months.

Treasured memories will be forever in the hearts of her children; William J. III (at home), Daughter Ruth Ann Lang (Wayne) Westwood, NJ, Son Stephen North Bangor, Son Lance (Brenda) Brushton, Son Richard (Allison) Brushton, Daughter Jennifer Schmittling (Tony) Kansas City, Mo., a brother-in-law Charles (Joan) Menke from Port Richey, FL as well as 10 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her parents and husband she is predeceased by all her siblings Eunice Dixon, Elvira Winters, and Leonard VanEss Jr.

SERVICES: A time of visitation will be held Saturday May 6, 2017 from 11-1 at the Brushton United Methodist Church, 3 Pearl Street, Brushton. Funeral services celebrating Elizabeth's life will be held at 1p.m. Interment will commence within the Sunnyside Cemetery, Brushton, where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband William.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Brushton United Methodist Church, or to the North Bangor Vol. Fire and EMS, 2265 St Rte. 11, North Bangor, NY 12966.
