BRUSHTON - Watson Manning, known to most as Junior, passed away unexpectedly at home in Brushton Sunday, November 3, 2018 after a long illness.
A time of visitation will be held Thursday (Nov. 15, 2018) from 10-11a.m at the Flint Funeral Home, Moira. Funeral services will commence at 11 a.m. Interment will take place in Sunnyside Cemetery, with the American Legion Post #939 providing military honors.
Watson was born at home in Brushton, NY May 4, 1932, the son of Watson and Gladys Curtis-Manning.
He graduated from Brushton High School in 1950. He worked as a psychiatric aide for New York State Mental Hygiene until he entered the US Air Force June 27, 1952. While in the service Junior attended Maryland University. Upon an honorable discharge in June 26, 1956 he resumed his previous employment and entered Nurses' Training in September of 1956. He attended New Paltz State Teacher's college graduated with a three-year degree in nursing (RN) from St. Luke's Hospital September 1959. During his career he worked for Radio Corp. of America in Greenland, Sunmount Developmental Center in Tupper Lake, and in many other hospitals across the country including Wingdale, NY where he retired after 20 or more years; Tallahassee, TN; West Palm Beach, Fl; and California.
In 1972 he received an Associate's degree in Liberal Arts which led to a major in psychology and special education.
Watson (Junior) enjoyed collecting new and old from garage sales and auctions so he could donate to those in need, and he enjoyed trying to beat the NY lottery pick three and pick 4 daily. He loved dogs and always had at least one if not three or four. Nikki was one of his favorites. He also dealt with multiple real estate purchases and rentals over the years.
He married the late Shirley E. Conrad June 25, 1956; who also was a nurse and they divorced July 21, 1961. A daughter, Robynn Lynn Manning was born April 13, 1957 and passed away April 12, 1978 from brain cancer shortly after she graduated from nursing school following in her parent's footsteps.
Watson (Junior) is survived by one sister, Mae (Ms. John) Gannon from Arvada, CO and a sister-in-law, Vi (Ms. Alfred) Manning of Brushton, NY along with a special nephew Martin Manning who has been his caregiver for many years along with many other nieces and nephews.
Besides his daughter and parent's, he was predeceased by three brothers; Walter Ziser, Alfred Manning, and James Manning all of Brushton.
Memorial donations in his honor can be made to the Brushton Rescue Squad or the Brushton Senior Citizens in lieu of flowers.
