Obituary of Jeanne Mulvana Parent
Jeanne Mulvana Parent, age 91 passed away peacefully on July 11, 2019 at her home surrounded by her family.
Jeanne was born March 28, 1928, the daughter of Edward and Grace (Mayville) Savage, in Bombay, New York. She was a 1945 graduate of Bombay High School. Jeanne was employed for a short time at ALCOA in Massena, New York and then worked for Frank Crowley, Postmaster of the Bombay Post Office, for two years.
On July 4, 1950 Jeanne married the love of her life, Joseph H. Mulvana, at St. Patrick's Church in Hogansburg, New York officiated by Msgr. Walter Funke. Together they lived in Bombay, New York until 1953 while Jeanne worked at Roy Brown's and F.L. Cross' Grocery Stores. They then moved to Rooseveltown and resided there for two years.
In April 1955, Jeanne and Joe purchased a three-quarter acre of land at the end of the Savage Road in Moira for $800, assured by her 11 brothers, sisters and Grandpa Savage that, "We will help you make this two-story dilapidated structure into a home." And that is exactly what they did, and Jeanne and Joe then began crafting a humble and modest life for themselves and their eight children. Jeanne remained in that dwelling her entire life.
In 1970, Jeanne was elected Moira Town Tax Collector, a position which she retained for 36 years. She also worked as a clerk for the Town of Moira for 10 years. Jeanne taught religious instruction for St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brushton, and served as a monitor at Brushton-Moira Central School.
Joe, her loving husband and father of her eight children, predeceased her on February 17, 1968. On April 4, 1974, she was united in marriage to Ray W. Phillips, Sr., at St. Mary's Church, Brushton officiated by Rev. Albert Richardson. Ray predeceased her on May 10, 1984. On November 28, 1997 she married Carlton Parent at St. Mary's Church in Brushton, New York officiated by Rev. Alfred Fish. Carlton predeceased her on September 9, 2008.
In addition to her three husbands, she was predeceased on October 22, 1975 by her 22 year old daughter, Martha Jeanne Mulvana, her parents, and her 11 sisters and brothers: Beatrice Duemars, Bernice Prashaw, Hazel Peets, Dorothy Derouchie, Elsie Peets, Harold, Neil,Victor, Gerald, Wayne, and Jack Savage.
Jeanne is survived by her seven children and their spouses: Steve Mulvana, Bombay, Laura Mulvana (Butch) Goodrow, St. Regis Falls, Jim and Cindie Mulvana, Tupper Lake, Dan and Bobbi Mulvana, Homer, William and Nina Mulvana, Moira, Jane Mulvana (Michael) Sevey, Moira, and Suzanne Mulvana (Kent) Niles, Northern West Chazy, 22 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by six stepchildren: Ray Jr., and David Phillips, Wayne, Donald, Dale, and Raymond Parent. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law: Ellen Savage, Moira, and Korleen Savage, Malone, several nieces and nephews.
Over the course of her life, Jeanne never turned down a friendly competitive game of SkipBo, dice, or her favorite card game, 500. On the rare occasion she had downtime, she could often be found keeping up with her daily crossword puzzles. But, her most treasured pastimes were all the beautiful memories spent with her family.
Jeanne was a very spiritual woman, never allowing her strong Catholic faith to waver. She firmly believed the world would be an even better place if everyone prayed the Rosary, and she continued to promote daily recitation of the Rosary to all of her family.
Jeanne will be fondly remembered for her outstanding homemade bread, most times yielding 35 loaves at a time. Jeanne was also excited when it came time to process 35 quarts of her special dill pickle recipe.
Deserving much praise and gratefulness, and holding a special place in her heart is her grandson and close confidant, Aaron Mulvana, who assisted her with anything she needed and was a great pillar of strength and support to her for almost 11 years.
Remembrances in her memory may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, Brushton, the Moira Rescue Squad, North Country Home Services, and/or Hospice of the North Country.
