FORT COVINGTON – With heavy hearts the family of Errol F. McElwain Jr. announces his passing on Wednesday (April 22, 2020), at his home from which his life began 84 years ago. Arrangements are with the Flint Funeral Home, Moira. Born in Ft. Covington the son of the late Errol F. and Marion (Foy) McElwain Sr. He graduated from Ft. Covington High School in 1955. On August 11, 1962 Errol united into marriage with Joanne Dunn at St. Mary's Church in Brushton. The couple purchased the family farm that year and was in operation until he retired in 2007. Errol was a longtime parishioner of St. Joseph's Church, Bombay and was in many organizations. He was a 4-H leader for 49 years, an active member of Dairylea, FFA, Agway committee Member, Farmland Protection Board, Farm Bureau, Past President and member of the Cooperative Extension, Past President of the Grange, Past member of the Ft. Covington Knights of Columbus, served on the board of the Soil, Water, Land Revitalization, and past director of Farm Credit. Errol was very proud to be the fifth generation to farm the McElwain land. He loved sharing the beauty of the farm with his daughter Meg as she was growing up. As a child she was taught there was only one type of truck, "Chevy" and there was only one type of tractor "Allis Chalmers". He had a great love of hockey and the Montreal Canadiens. He was a goalie and was scouted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1955. He shared his love of cows, especially Holsteins, with Meg and his granddaughter Errolynn. Together they spent several years at the Franklin County Fair in the cattle barn. These treasured memories will be forever in the hearts of his beloved wife Joanne of 57 years, and his daughter and son-in-law Meg (Brett) Bradley of Bombay. He will be greatly missed by his two grandchildren Errolynn (Noah) Bero of Bombay and Beaux Bradley of Bombay. Besides his parents Errol is predeceased by his siblings Bernard McElwain, Anne Pickering, and Joan Cunningham. Donations in his memory may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, Fort Covington; Bombay Fire Department; Fort Covington Fire Department or Fort Covington Rescue Squad.
