MOIRA – With heavy hearts the family of Susan M. (Niles) Westurn, 61, announce her passing Saturday (Oct. 31, 2020) at her home with her family, and her faithful fur baby, Cookie, by her side. Arrangements are with the Flint Funeral Home, Moira. Born March 10, 1959 the daughter of Robert and Maeve (Dutton) Niles. She attended Salmon River High School. Susan was lovingly known as a "Jill"-of-all-trades by her family and was no stranger to hard work. During her marriage to David Westurn, she successfully ran the family farm and did logging on the side. Susan was the only woman to work for Biondo Construction while they constructed the New York State Police barracks in Malone and she was also the first woman to obtain her CDL license for truck driving in Franklin County. She was very proud of her trailblazing accomplishments. Later she was employed with Georgia Pacific on the assembly line in Plattsburgh, NY. Treasured memories will be forever in the hearts of her children Katrina (Mark) Ownby of Massena, Samuel (Nichole) Westurn of Massena, Rockne (Michelle) Cox of Brushton, and Marcel Cox II of Malone. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Outside of work, her family, children, and grandchildren were her proudest accomplishments. Susan found great joy in bringing her mom, sisters, and aunts to bingo as a young adult and later playing radio bingo with her nieces, nephews, children and grandchildren to "teach them their numbers". Her love of the casino, or "cha" as she called it, was shared with her by her children and many friends and family. Susan also enjoyed yard sales from New York to Tennessee. There wasn't a garage sale she could pass up during her many spontaneous road trips she loved to take. She was a woman who lived life to the fullest and wasn't "afraid to try anything once", including riding hoverboards or making "Tik Toks" with her grandkids! Susan often proudly stated that her grandchildren "made her feel young again". Susan will be greatly missed by her surviving siblings Janice (Svend) Olsen of Deer Isle Maine, Roy (Debbie) Niles of Bellevue Nebraska, Mark (Mary) Niles of Malone, Patsy (George) Shute' of Newport, TN, and Wilda (Gary) Shutts of Moira, and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents who both passed in 2007, she is predeceased by a brother Terry Niles who passed in 1954 and a sister Kathy Benko in 2008. A time of visitation will be held Saturday (Nov. 7th) from 4-445pm at the Cooks Corners Community Church. Funeral services will commence at 5 pm. with the Rev. Bentley McQuinn presiding. Memorial contributions in Susan's honor may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.flintfuneralhomeny.com
