BANGOR – Rita L. Monica age, 99 also remembered as the "Apple Lady" passed away Thursday evening (May 12, 2022) at the Alice Hyde Medical Center. She was born in North Bangor on February 14, 1923, the daughter of Leo and Mary (Thebert) LaRock. She graduated in 1939 3rd highest in her class from Malone Franklin Academy. On June 26, 1947, Rita united into marriage with Winfred W. Monica at the rectory at St. Augustine's Church, he predeceased her on October 1, 1985.
Rita was proud of her Catholic faith and as a long-time communicant of St. Augustine's Church. She taught Sunday School and was a lector for over 40 years. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, collecting antiques, and arranging wildflowers.
Rita was a long-time secretary working for Seal Test, the Department of ASCS, retiring after 50 years of service with the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Franklin County. For 25 years she sold apples on the corner in North Bangor, many local people got to know her as the "Apple Lady".
Treasured memories will be forever in the hearts of her son Bryan and his wife Diane (Bashaw) Monica of Hardy, Virginia. She is also survived by a granddaughter Shelly Monica a grandson Greg Monica and his companion Carolyn St. Denis, two great grandchildren Shelby Monica and Emma Kosofsky.
Besides her parents and husband, she is predeceased by two brothers Wayne LaRocque, Francis LaRocque, and a sister Martha LaRocque.
Memorial contributions in Rita's honor may be made to St. Augustine's Church or to the Bangor Vol. Fire and EMS.
