Obituary of Donald J. Brownell

MOIRA – With heavy hearts the family of Donald J. Brownell age 79, announce his passing on Sunday morning (Jan. 8, 2023) at the AHMC Alice Center. Arrangements are entrusted to the Flint Funeral Home, Moira. Donald was born into this world on August 16, 1943, in Malone, NY, the son of the late John and Cecile (Thebault) Brownell. After graduation Donald began working at the Tru Stitch Slipper factory. At the age of 23 Donald started working at ALCOA, later he was drafted into the United States Army to serve in the Vietnam War . During his enlistment he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Combat Infantryman Badge, Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, Purple Heart with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Army Commendation Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster. On June 30, 1962, Donald united into marriage with Sandra Black at the Bombay United Methodist Church. A union that shared over 60 years of togetherness. Besides being a devoted husband, he was a very dedicated loving father and grandfather. He was a long-time member of the Brushton-Moira American Legion Post #939. Donald had a passion to paint pictures and had a love for horses, especially Appaloosa's Golden Palomino bread and shared a special bond with his dog Minnie. Treasured memories will be forever in the hearts of his wife Sandra, and his children and their spouses Tracie (Daniel) Griffin of Constable, Tammy (Cliff) Hebert of Malone, and Terri (Ronald) Stickney of Norwood. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and several great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his parents. A time of visitation will be held Saturday (Jan. 13th) from 11-12:45 p.m. at the Flint Funeral Home, Moira where Donald's funeral services will commence at 1 p.m. Interment will be held at a later date in the spring at a time to be announced. Memorial contributions in Donald's honor may be made the Brushton Moira American Legion Post # 939.
